Why Rimas
Why sell to us
Nearly a decade in the gold trade — London, Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, and now Leicester.
Nearly a decade in the gold trade
The shop is new. The experience behind it is not: close to ten years buying and trading gold, first in London, then in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, and now over the counter in Leicester.
Photo ID, every time
We ask every customer for photo identification when buying precious metals. It protects you and it protects us. Bring a passport or driving licence with you.
Valued face to face
Your items are tested and weighed in front of you, and the figure is explained before you decide anything.
No obligation
Testing, weighing and valuation are free. If you would rather think about it, take the figure with you.
Hallmark reference
What the numbers on your item mean
British silver is stamped with its purity in parts per thousand. On the underside, near the rim, or on the back of a clasp. The mark is small — a magnifying glass, or a phone camera on zoom, usually finds it.
| Mark | Grade | Purity |
|---|---|---|
| 999 | Fine silver | 99.9% |
| 925 | Sterling | 92.5% |
No mark at all? Bring it in — we will test it free of charge rather than have you guess.
FAQ
Selling silver: your questions
How much is sterling silver worth per gram?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure, so a gram contains 0.925g of silver. Its value is that share of the live market price, less our buying rate.
Silver moves with the market, so we quote on the day. Call the shop for the current figure, or bring your pieces in and we will weigh them for you.
What does 925 mean on silver?
925 is the hallmark for sterling silver — 92.5% pure, the standard for British silverware and jewellery.
999 indicates fine silver, which is almost entirely pure and usually found in bullion bars and coins rather than jewellery.
Do you buy silver-plated items?
No. Plated items are marked EPNS, EP or A1, and carry only a thin coating of silver over a base metal. There is not enough silver in them to be worth recovering.
If an item carries no mark, bring it in — we will test it for free rather than have you guess.
Do you buy silver cutlery and candlesticks?
Yes, though with a caveat worth knowing before you come in. Candlesticks and some cutlery handles are weighted or filled with pitch or plaster to make them stand up and feel substantial.
Only the silver is valued, so a heavy pair of candlesticks may hold far less silver than their weight suggests. We separate and weigh the silver content properly.
Do you buy silver coins?
Yes. Pre-1947 British coins are 50% silver and pre-1920 coins are sterling, so ordinary circulated change from those years has a silver value.
Some coins are worth more to a collector than their silver content. Bring them in rather than selling them by weight.
Do I need ID to sell silver?
Yes, the same as for gold. We ask every customer for photo identification when buying precious metals.
A passport or a driving licence is ideal. Call ahead if that is not something you have and we will tell you what else we can accept.
